What It Is! are four unique voices whose creativity and passion blend into a powerhouse of captivating a cappella soul. Their distinct arrangements are steeped in the soulful sounds of such greats as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Etta James, and Laura Mvula. With rich textures and a heartfelt delivery, their engaging performances will captivate and move you. Coming from diverse musical styles and backgrounds Mimi Beyene, Cass King, Patti Powell, and Carol Wiedemann bring East Van Soul to a whole new level.
What It Is! were featured with  Queer as Funk at their Pride 2016 show, which sold out the Commodore Ballroom. They were also honoured to perform at  "Stayed On Freedom: A Celebration of Black History Month" alongside Dawn Pemberton, Marcus Mosley and jazz legend Eleanor Collins. The quartet has also featured at the In The House Festival, and The Con Brio Festival. In 2015 What It Is! produced and performed in the sold-out "Acapella Rumble" at the WISE Hall, and they recently released their first self-titled EP, What It Is!
